Natasha

"I thought the immigrant space was going to be a safe space. I did not expect to encounter anti-Muslim bias here." — This is Natasha's Story.

When Natasha moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, she looked for spaces that would be safe and welcoming. Her first choice was the immigrant and domestic violence sector. However, when Natasha spoke out against important immigrant issues such as street harassment, she was told, “these are Muslim problems, these are not immigrant problems” and “to stop raising Muslim issues.”

Natasha asks for everyone to stand up and get involved in their communities. “We need to deal with this unacceptable and growing bias. Our children are getting discriminated against, we are not getting health services, we are not getting emergency services… This is a big problem.” To the greater community, she would say, “Even if you just reach out to one person. It can truly make a big difference.“

About the Hate2Healing Campaign
Recognizing the strength of storytelling, CCMW launches a unique Hate2Healing anti-hate social media campaign to mark October’s Islamic Heritage Month. The campaign comprises 15 videos from diverse Muslim women, girls and non-binary people coming together to speak about their lived experiences of hate, racism and Islamophobia. The campaign aims to start the healing and recovery process for many survivors of hate by encouraging them to share their stories and start talking about their experiences both online and offline.
